The Heidenheim Heidekoepfe have won the championship in the German Baseball-Bundesliga. They defeated the Bonn Capitals 8-1 in a one-sided decisive game five of the German Baseball Finals on Saturday in front of an official attendance of about 1,500, prevailing 3-2 in the best-of-five series.
For Heidenheim it is their third German baseball championship after 2009 and 2015 highlighting their 25th club anniversary. For Bonn its their second vice championship after 1999. The Heidekoepfe won game two, four and five in the series, while the Capitals won game one and three.
In game five Clayton Freimuth dominated with a complete game performance. He struck out 12 batters in nine innings, allowing just three hits, a run and two walks. He worked with a 2-0 lead after the first inning, which Heidenheim extended to seven runs after five innings.
Bonn didn’t score until the eighth inning and on offense couldn’t do much all afternoon. Mitch Nilsson and Shawn Larry hit home runs for Heidenheim. Nilsson drove in three overall. Simon Guehring collected two hits, two runs and two RBI. Adrian Stommel score the lone run for the Caps. Sascha Koch got the loss.
During the medal ceremony, Freimuth received the MVP award for the final series, while Eric Brenk was honored as best batter and Max Schmitz as best pitcher.
