The Cuban national team captured the title at the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam on Sunday with a 9-3 victory over the Netherlands in the finals. After both teams exchanged runs in the second period, Cuba took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homerun by Eriel Sanchez. The Dutch squad fought right back and evened the score on a two-run shot by Sidney de Jong. However the hopes for an upset by the Europeans didn’t last long, as Cuba regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Giorvis Duvergel. Two insurance runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth sealed the win.
Ariel Borrero went three-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI. Sanchez and Leonys Martin also crossed the plate twice. Miguel A. Gonzalez (CUB) gave up five hits and three runs (2 ER) in five-plus innings. Diegomar Markwell (NED) conceded four hits, a run and two bb in three innings. Maikel Folch picked up the win after four scoreless innings of one-hit, one-walk relief. Michiel van Kampen took the loss after being charged with three runs on six hits in two frames.
