Sénart righted the ship with two one-sided victories in Nice, while Metz also earned the two-game sweep on the road, its first wins of the year. The other two series, however, provided le drame, as Montigny took a game from Rouen at home in a series that saw each club plate only five runs. Meanwhile, in La Rochelle, the visiting Barracudas lashed out for a mercy rule victory in the opener before the host Boucaniers rallied to claim the nightcap. The top three teams in both pools are separated by only two games, setting French baseball up for an exciting June, when play resumes.
Highlights
At Montigny, Robinson Maestre pitched 10 shutout frames against visiting Rouen in Game 1, striking out 10 and permitting only three hits. The Cougars, however, could not strike against three Huskies moundsmen and, in the eleventh, the Normans finally broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs. Long-time Australian minor leaguer and national team member Todd van Steensel held on for a 2-1 decision. After a rough start to the nightcap, Montigny plated three in the seventh before earning its revenge in the ninth as Killian Besoli chopped a single up-the-middle for the 4-3 victory.
After splitting a series at Sénart last week, Montpellier continued its impressive road performance with a 12-2 drubbing of La Rochelle. Ariel Soriano hit his first home run of the year for a 6-2 lead in the seventh and Kevin Canelon improved to 5-0, dropping his ERA to 0.57 by surrendering only two unearned runs in six frames. His seven strikeouts gave him 44 for the season in only 31.2 innings.
Wilce Ñieves punched out 11 batters of his own in the nightcap, setting the Buccaneers up for a 6-4 victory after a rally in the sixth. Daniel Rosell was 2-for-2 with a double for La Rochelle, but it was the first of his two walks that scored the game-winning run in Game 2.
